Pandorum
Date: 01/04/2010
Author: Jason Coleman
Pandorum has been compared to Alien by producer and filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson and it’s not a fair match. Alien was a go for broke suspense flick, whereas Pandorum isn't afraid to take its time. Not that it’s a bad film, but it’s more an examination of the human condition through fantastical sci-fi elements - a character examining staple of artistic filmmaker Christian Alvart. Plus with top-notch talent like the quirky Ben foster, the surly Dennis Quaid and a supporting cast that fills out the flick nicely (not to mention some stunning visuals) Alvart has constructed quite a memorable little movie - a thinking man’s space picture. The very tasty DVD extras on this Anchor Bay release include a full length commentary track with Alvart and producer Jeremy Bolt that’s fairly technical with a few revealing bits (Alvart used a famed Italian comic series that he calls “basically soft core porn in space” for inspiration for his ship designs!), plus three Featurettes that include a Behind the Scenes doc with tons of interviews, clips and some cool on-set footage (love all the stuff on the hunters!), What Happened to Nadia’s Team, which is an informative video made prior to the tragedy (most likely a deleted scene unused!) and a Flight Team Training Video, a mock video with more detail about the plot and film scenario. Not enough? How about a whopping sixteen Alternate/Deleted Scenes (why did they get rid of the cool extra details for that opening - they rock!), a section of Still Galleries, a Theatrical Trailer and an Also on DVD section to keep the adventure going. So for those who have a hankering for some sci-fi with both brains and beauty, Pandorum feeds the need.
